“The most difficult things working with newspaper, is actually what makes this material most interesting to me.”

[link]

“I have always been inspired by challenge, so when I decided to work with newspaper, it was in fact due to the limitations or difficulty this material presented – both in regard to color palette and fragility."

[link]

"Holding a profound respect for this material, I have never regarded it as "recycled" or "trash." Even the yellowing aspect of newsprint has been an important factor in my work, and I often encourage this process of yellowing before my work leaves my studio."

[link]

”My manipulation of the tubes makes my work very strong, and the color limitation is a challenge that inspires me for each work I create. If I one day no longer find newspaper challenging as a work material, I would no longer work with it. But so far I am very inspired by newspaper. Furthermore, I also love the information aspect and importance of newspaper.”

[link]

"I find the informative aspect of newspaper quite important. Since each piece I create holds all the world/local news of that particular time frame, it becomes an historic piece within itself. All artists date their oeuvre with great importance - reflecting their moment in time. My works not only hold a date, they also represent an historic documentation of our lives. This information may not be of importance to the viewer, but for me each piece becomes a diary."

"These peacocks borrow human mating plumage, anthropomorphically showcasing our adaptations and natural orders as their own. They are made of fake fingernails, barrettes, nail polish, false eyelashes, and jewelry to represent the choices involved in biological processes that are unique to humankind."

"I use art as a medium to examine biological ramifications of human behavior. My work juxtaposes traditional craft and artisanal techniques with non-traditional materials to examine mankind’s drive to modify itself as well as its environment. By playing with the convergence of biology and product design to create new cultural artifacts, I try to question social constructions of need, design, and individual desire."

Pixelated Sculptures by Shawn Smith

Texas-based artist Shawn Smith transforms an image into a 3-dimensional pixelated sculpture by cutting sheets of plywood or particle board into 1/2″ wide strips of varying lengths, then dying them different colors with hand-mixed dyes of ink and acrylic paint.

[Link]

"My work investigates the slippery intersection between the digital world and reality. Specifically, I am interested in how we experience nature through technology."

[Link]

"In my building process, I start with a full sheet of material like plywood or MDF and cut it into 1/2" strips of varying lengths--typically 1/2" to 2' long. I then hand dye each strip of wood individually with dyes mixed from ink and acrylic paint. I mix each color by hand to create a huge palette of colors in order to give the sculpture more depth and visual interest before assembling the object."

[Link]

“Through the process of pixelation, color is distilled, some bits of information are lost, and the form is abstracted. Making the intangible tangible, I view my building process as an experiment in alchemy, using man-made composite and recycled materials to represent natural forms.”

[Link]

[Link]

"I am very interested in how intertwined humans have become with digital devices. I think the lines are becoming increasingly blurred. I find this to be a playground ripe with multiple interpretations."

Incredible Portraits Made with One Continuous Line by Renbo

Reddit user “Renbo” creates amazing portraits by drawing a single line that does not crosses itself or end. It’s just one continuous loop.

"First I rough sketch who I'm gonna draw, then I just go and let my mind wander."

"I usually start in the corner of the canvas/paper."

"It puts my brain in a good place, completely random and I don't know where I will go next."

"When I used to use a pen (all those besides clint and dwight) I wouldn't lift it unless my hand got fatigued."

Asked how he started doing these unique works of art, Renbo said, "Got bored in highschool and did it on the sides of my paper, later looked through that stuff and saw them so I've started painting them and NEVER NEVER feel bad about art you do. Stop comparing and just draw for yourself."

Asked whether it takes a lot of planning to do, Renbo said, "Mostly wing it, some planing but I like to keep a blank mind so everything stays random, if I think to much patterns come out."

Human Hair Leaves by Jenine Shereos

Jenine Shereos create awe-inspiring series of leaves made of human hair.

[link]

"Inspired by the delicate and detailed venation of a leaf, I began stitching individual strands of hair by hand into a water- soluble backing material. At each point where one strand of hair intersected another, I stitched a tiny knot, so that when the backing was dissolved, the entire piece was able to hold its form."

[link]

"Creating this work was a very meditative process for me, as I found myself lost in the detail of the small, organic microcosms that began taking shape."

[link]

[link]

"The complex network of lines present in this work mimics the organic patterns found in nature and speaks to the natural systems of transformation, growth and decay. Allusions to the vascular tissue of plants, as well as the vascular system of the human body, exist simultaneously; the delicate trace of a hair falling silently, imperceptibly, from one’s head becoming the veins of a leaf as it falls from a tree leaving its indelible imprint on the ground below."
